The V Word: Vote.

Politics is what keeps our nation running. To some  it's what makes our country strong and great. To others, politics is a game.  To most...they're indifferent. Stephen who?!? Dalton what?!? What's a MP..melting point?!

Now you may think I am exaggerating, but the sad reality is, I am not. In the last federal election, a mere 15% of the country's 18-24 year old citizens voted while 52% of the entire country balloted. This is truly unfortunate as the electoral process is what drives democracy. Governed for the people, by the people. And you know what? In Ethiopia, since democratic elections came along in 1994, voter turnout has consistently been 90% +. Same goes for many other countries. You know why? Because it is democracy that allows us to have the freedom and equality. A democracy is where all citizens get direct and equal participation in the development, proposal in what gets into legislation. By voting, we have a voice in the direction of where the country is headed. In fact, it is for democracy that hundreds are dying in the middle east right now; in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Bahrain, all for the sake of the freedoms and rights we enjoy in Canada. People are dying...for democracy.

Now you may say what does the government have to do with me? But let me tell you this: everything. From our taxes, to our education system, to our infrastructure, health care, and laws. For example, tuitions are regulated by the Ontario government, yet this year, a 4% tuition increase will be applied to Waterloo and similar elsewhere. The HST you pay on your iPod or bowl of ramen. The crazy wait time in hospital ERs when I took my friend to the hospital. The bathroom law that allows people who feels they are a girl in a guy's body to use a female's washroom freely.

The TTC.

Politics is more involved in your life than you think.

So, if people are dying for this thing called democracy, why do only 15% of us go out to vote on election day? Are we being complacent? ignorant?

Now, your voice in the elected representatives in the government shapes this country. Canada is a nation that its citizens stand proudly for its leadership and actions for pro-human rights and freedoms and democratic rights. Having been founded upon a solid bedrock as a democracy one hundred forty-four years ago, at a time when major countries were controlled by emperors and monarchy, this country continued to be revolutionize with world-leading accomplishments such as the Human Bill of Rights by the Diefenbaker government, the peacekeeping missions by Lester B Pearson and the renowned Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a guarantee for basic rights and freedom that allows us to maintain equality, freedom of conscience, freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of belief, freedom of expression,  freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom of association, and the right to participate in political activities and the right to a democratic form of government.

I had an opportunity to listen to General Romeo Dallaire (in charge of the 1994 UN missions in the Rwandan genocide) last week. He mentioned that if young people ever decide to consolidate, their influence could affect generations to come.

"You hold the balance of power in this democracy - and you're not exercising it."

As an election becomes imminent, I want to challenge y'all to pay close attention to the party platforms, and decide on where you want to see in our nation's future.

When that they comes, I hope you'll know what to do. Hopefully you will know the V word.

On a bit of a tangent here, but this is the historical fourth stanza of O Canada:

Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our Dominion in thy loving care;
Help us to find, O God, in thee
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the better Day,
We ever stand on guard.

May God keep this country glorious and free!

Jesus Week Music & Prayer Night

God, thank you so much for the time tonight, to be able to praise and worship together campus wide. Jesus Week. Thank you for your unconditional love, the sacrifice of your only Son, of which we don't deserve. But, through your grace and mercy, we have hope and new life.

God, this night was just amazing. To be able to sing and shout, I wish it went on for longer!  This week's just been pretty busy. (2 chem labs, midterm, phys assignment, biol assignment, biol test, calc assignment, calc midterm to come). I've been relying on your strength, you've taught me not to worry, yet I haven't really chilled with you alone lately.  With that, the quality of time with you have suffered.

Tonight, seeing people come together across the campus, across the fellowship come together and worship and praise as one voice, one unity in the body of Christ- it was so encouraging.

To be able to focus on You, and You along, God, was refreshing and well needed, and a wakeup call to me that you are everything I long for, not my academics, not my reputation, not my achievements. Nothing else can satisfy my desire and passion.

I ask that the Holy Spirit will dwell in us so that we may live pure and godly lives so that others may see your love and goodness reflected in us.

Prayer is so powerful. All night, I know the Spirit worked throughout the night. Pray. Pray. Pray. I felt a peace that I haven't had in a while, and all my worries and life was left outside the door. It was so good to slow things down, time didn't matter anymore. I only wanted to focus on God. It's 2:30am, I've had a long day and I'm still not exhausted. Hmm...Weird.

"..rejoice in the hope of the glory of God." Romans  5:2b

May Your glory fall on the campus, and Your name be lifted high all across Waterloo this week!

Sola Gratia.

Power of Your Love.

Lord I come to You
Let my heart be changed, renewed
Flowing from the grace
That i have found in You
And Lord I have come to know
The weakenesses I see in me
Will be stripped away
By the power of Your love

Hold me close
Let Your love surround me
Bring me near
Draw me to Your side
And as I wait
I will rise up like the eagle
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love

Lord unveil my eyes
Let me see You face to face
The knowledge of Your love
As You live in me
And Lord renew my mind
As Your will unfolds in my life
In living every day
By the power of Your love

And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love

-----------------------------------------

God, you are just so amazing, I'm so filled with your love right now! Thank you for Your presence tonight! It is a blessing to have had a night to glorify you, and to love our brothers and sisters! Let us continue to love each other every week, every day, filled with your grace and love!

" Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him." 1 John: 7-9

By the power of Your everlasting love,

Sola Gratia.

Dirty Laundry.

From about grade 7 or 8, it's been routine for me to crack open the newspaper in the morning, whether it's a subscription, a metro, or online. I've been trying to keep that up. I believe it's so important for us to know what's going on in the world, and not be ignorant about the things going on around the globe, especially with politics, as Canadian citizens should be concerned with where our country is headed. Reading the news is something I've grown to enjoy, and in a country that guarantees freedom of press and media, it is something to not take for granted. As much as free press goes, lately, I feel like news is heading in a downward direction. I'm sure all of you remember the Maclean's controversy about an article that appeared to target Asian students?

For many years, Toronto Star has been my source for news, as it is the only one that provides the in-depth local coverage of the what's happening in the city. When it comes to policies, we know that newspaper companies are often unofficially affiliated with a political spectrum. Lately, reading the Toronto Star has been unbearable. During the Toronto city elections, the Toronto Star continuously bashed Rob Ford with news articles targeting him very negatively. Many of its claims were slanderous and completely untrue. This controversy brought many complaints from its loyal readers. They also published an article asking for the other candidates to stand that so that George Smitherman can defeat Ford. After election, Toronto Star continued to bash Ford about potential breaking of promises. (DUDE. it's day 1 on the job! Let the man get in and do some work first before accusations!) Throughout the year until now, this newspaper empire continued to feed half a million Torontonians with propaganda against Ford, and it's driving me nuts! I am FED UP.

Now, I will be frank with y'all. No hidden motives. I supported Ford in the October election (contact me if you want to know my reasons), and I agree with a lot but also not agree with some of his policies, but this blog entry has nothing to do about my political views. It is about the integrity of the news we get fed on a daily basis.

There are 9 elements to journalism,  according to Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel, of which I have listed the first 4:
  1. Journalism's first obligation is to the truth.
  2. Its first loyalty is to the citizens.
  3. Its essence is discipline of verification.
  4. Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover.
I don't know how much politics is involved, but just because you make your political donations to some and not others doesn't mean you get to backstab the loyalty of your readers. A journalist's obligation is to truth and that's just not happening. Now, this also applies to many other media outlets as well, not just the Star. We are fed with so much "dirty laundry"; in magazines, newspapers, tv, internet that we don't consider what they are telling us. The media feeds up with the latest gossip bout JBiebs or complete BS and we accept it! In fact, we embrace it! It is such "news" that keeps TV ratings up and People flying off the racks.

A song my grade 6 teacher showed us came to mind. It's called Dirty Laundry, by Bob Henley. Here's a verse from it:

Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry.

I admit, gossip sells. Marketing sure loves it.  But it is up to us to accept what's right and what's wrong. I struggle with it. We all struggle with it.

So I urge you all to make decisions about what you're reading and seeing, and what's right. It is unfortunately that the several journalists that do write well do not get enough recognition for their writing.

By the end of the day, all I want to read is the truth. But then, I realized...there is only one truth. and that's the word of God. What we accept to be the truth. That Jesus came onto this earth to die to pay the ransom of our sins. Whoever believes in Him, believes the truth, and acts in truth, and shall have everlasting life. There is just so much evil, gossips, scandals and corruption in this world. This world needs to know God's love.

"This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth." 1 John 5:6

There is nothing truer than the words of the bible.

------------
So at this point, all I am requesting is unbiased news sources that tells us a neutral view of what's happening in the world. If you have an opinion, write it in Opinions & Editorials. News is news. You can't change it, you can't modify it. If you do...well...that's just scandalous. I support The Star because of its local coverage, but hey, this is not a grade school playground anymore. Stop the mudslinging and grow up.

Thanks.
Sincerely,
A (former) Loyal Reader

Glad to be Alive! :D

Thank you God for life. He is the Creator of all things, the Giver of life, yet He can  take it away in a breath. Praise the LORD for every moment you are alive.

Tonight's bible study really spoke to me. A call to persevere. What it means to have faith in God. I feel God's been teaching me so much about what it means to trust and have confidence in Him. My parents named me Abraham for a reason. No, for the umpteenth time, I'm not named after Lincoln! Abraham, in the bible was a man of faith in God, and through His faith, God views him as a righteous man. Although the stresses and struggles that I may be carrying right now seems to be heavy, there is nothing to be worried about for His yoke is easy, His burden is light. God, I am sorry for the little faith we have sometimes.

Rely on His strength, and through Him, nothing is impossible. Although things may look gloomy,  how ever long the suffering lasts, His light will shine in the darkness.

"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised." Hebrews 10:35-36

Finishing the night, I was so full of joy in Christ that all I really wanted to do was to praise Him and pray with passion. I haven't felt like that in a while. Through today's scripture, we saw that Christians led a hard life back then. We are so blessed to be in a place where we can pray and praise without persecution. God is so good to us, all I desired to do that night was to gather my brothers and sisters to meet together, to encourage, love each other and to praise Him!

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,  not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." v. 24-25

I was hoping to find more froshies to go to Lester House together for prayers, but no one seemed to want to go. Disappointed,  I was determined to go there by myself.

On the way, my glasses started to fog up, the drizzle started to fall heavily. Taking the shortcut through the townhouses turned out not to be an easy task. The sidewalks were completely covered with thick white ice. Executing my path carefully, I continued forward. I was determined to pray with others that night. Then, I got to the big hill. It was covered with ice, but I decided to scale up by holding on to the metal fence. Going halfway up, my feet suddenly lost traction, and my body was immediately pulled down, leaving my fingers clinging on to the metal wires. Checking up on myself, I thought my fingers were feeling wet and bloody, but it turned out to be only water. Thank you God. I decided to walk up a part that had minimal ice. As a climbed up that hill, I didn't know it was covered with black ice (no light at all in the area) and i came tumbling down. I got up, and I was physically okay. Nothing broken, nothing bleeding. I thanked Him. Still determined to get there, I walked through the townhouses parking lot. Little did I know the pavement was covered with black ice. As a car approached, I stepped aside. Little did I know I was stepping onto an ice patch. I fell sideways onto the ground, right in FRONT of the approaching car. The car stopped in time. The lady was lost and asked me directions. I told her. Now I don't know if she slowed down because she wanted to talk to me, but I'm so thankful that God gave me life, for I came out unharmed yet again! That's three times! Praise Him for his protection! I'm so grateful that I am still here today because of His grace and mercy.

It wasn't a coincidence that this happened tonight after bible study. God was showing me what it means to persevere and to trust in Him. For every time I fall, He carries me up. He's telling me to not be discouraged by my stumbles and trials, that He is in control. He is the light and hope.

All this I am able to do by his grace and mercy, for His love for us is so great that He sent His only son to die on the cross for our sins. It is so beautiful yet incomprehensible, God I ask you to help us to understand the depth of Your love. For with His love, "we have confidence to enter the Most High Place by the blood of Jesus."

"And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." v.10

Praise God for His unconditional love!

Sola Gratia.
